On February 6, 2025, the Borno Sickle Cell Care Foundation had the privilege of participating in a high-impact event organized by the Global Action Network for Sickle Cell and Other Inherited Blood Disorders (GANSID) in collaboration with the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH). The event brought together key stakeholders to discuss and advance efforts in sickle cell care, advocacy, and policy development.

The program was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Board of GANSID, the ST Care Team, the Hematology Department of UMTH, the Chief Medical Director of UMTH, and Hon. Maina Garbu, Chairman of the Committee on Health at the House of Assembly. Their presence underscored a strong commitment to improving the lives of individuals affected by sickle cell disease in Borno State.
As a representative of Borno Sickle Cell Care Foundation, our CEO, Bashir Abdullahi Isa Mfs, presented an overview of the foundation’s work, highlighting its impact and the ongoing need for sustainable support and collaboration. The discussions during the event reinforced the urgency of strengthening sickle cell care services, increasing public awareness, and advocating for policy reforms.

Among the key outcomes of the event were:
The commitment to establish a dedicated Sickle Cell Center to enhance specialized care and treatment.
A proposed bill for mandatory compatibility testing to promote informed decision-making and reduce the prevalence of sickle cell disease.
These milestones represent significant progress in the collective mission to improve sickle cell healthcare and advocacy in Borno State. The engagement and support from stakeholders reaffirmed the foundation’s vision of ensuring that sickle cell patients receive the necessary care, awareness, and policy backing.
Moving forward, the Borno Sickle Cell Care Foundation remains committed to fostering partnerships, advocating for policy implementation, and expanding its initiatives to drive lasting change. The foundation extends its appreciation to all stakeholders for their invaluable contributions and unwavering dedication to the cause.
