Borno Sickle Cell Care Foundation Conducts Education and Warm Clothes Distribution Program in Jere Local Government Area

The Borno Sickle Cell Care Foundation (BSCCF) recently organized a community outreach program focusing on education about sickle cell disorder and the distribution of warm clothing at Galtimary Primary School in the Jere Local Government Area, Borno State, Nigeria. The event took place on Friday, December 27, 2024, and targeted one of the most vulnerable communities affected by sickle cell anemia.

Purpose of the Program

The event was organized to address widespread myths, misconceptions, and misinformation surrounding sickle cell anemia. BSCCF identified a critical need for awareness and practical guidance on managing the disorder, emphasizing the importance of proper care for individuals living with sickle cell anemia to ensure their health and wellness.

Community Engagement and Participants

The program brought together participants from Gwange, London, and Galtimary wards within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. These participants, who included individuals with sickle cell anemia and their families, were invited to Galtimary Primary School to learn more about the condition.

 

Educational Sessions

Throughout the three-hour event, experienced facilitators delivered informative sessions. The instructors included:

Key topics discussed included:

1. Management of Sickle Cell Disorder: Practical tips for managing health challenges associated with the condition.

2. Health and Hygiene: The role of good hygiene in preventing complications.

3. Prevention of Sickle Cell Anemia: Strategies for reducing the prevalence of the disorder.

 

The facilitators also encouraged individuals with sickle cell anemia, often referred to as “sickle cell warriors,” to embrace their resilience and intelligence. They emphasized that individuals with the disorder are capable of achieving their goals and leading fulfilling lives, provided they prioritize their health and well-being.

Interactive Engagement

The program featured an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing participants to seek clarification and share their experiences. This engagement helped to foster understanding and strengthen the connection between the facilitators and the audience.

Distribution of Aid

As part of the program, BSCCF distributed essential items to participants, including:

Warm clothes for children

Gently used clothing and pomade for adults

Sanitary pads for young women

 


These donations were made possible through support from sister organizations, including:

Zadaya Kanem Polio and Disability Initiative, led by Hajiya Adama Balla

A5 Sickle Cell Initiatives, headed by Comrade Aliyu Bakama from Potiskum, Yobe State


Community Feedback and Recommendations

The program successfully reached 60 targeted beneficiaries, with additional attendance from family members, bringing the total to over 60 participants. Attendees expressed their gratitude for the initiative and commended BSCCF for addressing such a critical issue.

Parents of individuals with sickle cell anemia used the opportunity to appeal to stakeholders and humanitarian organizations to support BSCCF in continuing its work. They highlighted the importance of sustained efforts in raising awareness and providing aid to improve the lives of people living with sickle cell anemia.

Conclusion

The program was a significant step towards dispelling misconceptions about sickle cell anemia and equipping communities with knowledge and resources. The collaborative efforts of BSCCF and its partners demonstrated the impact of community-focused initiatives in promoting health and well-being.
